Why does many japanese novels often used hikikomori, neet or loser mc as a setting?

I think it's because the author is projecting himself with the mc.

Another theory I have is that majority of LN/WN readers in Japan are hikikomori/need/losers so those readers can easily empathize with the mc.

Next theory is that it is a tried and tested cliche. So there would be familiarity with other stories of similar premises so readers from those can be easily brought over.
