I can't help but wonder what weird tweaking they'll do with the patch on this project. Bat pics instead of cgs? The character's parents liking cock? Maybe their trial patch will change your desktop wallpaper and cursors again? I really am looking forward to this project and I do appreciate their efforts, but I wish they'd stop the lame-ass practical jokes.
Already tested up to Chapiter 2 (where the TL finishes) and everything's just fine. No CGs changed. Unless I was dumb enough to not notice the jokes or my brain automatically filtered them. Really, they are a good team, though a bit on the immature side.
Though, Insem did admits that he was really getting irritated with their previous project near the end and that they did release it quickly for some reason I forget.. and it happened to be on the 1st of April. Losing their Editor didn't help at all either, since he was in work of "fixing" the lines into proper english instead of tasteless and stupid ones.
Don't be too harsh, Koutouteki, or am I the too forgiving one? Do admit the trial patch one was a pain at first though.
I don't think this is about being too harsh or forgiving. I'm just wary of them because every patch I've gone through so far has had some kind of nasty surprise in it. So, every time I run a patch I can't help but wonder what they put in it this time. Now, this doesn't stop me from enjoying their work as a whole, since they do pick good titles and supply a good translation overall, but I find that playing these pranks does diminish the work at least in some small way. This makes no sense to me. Why go through all the hard work to make a good translation and then purposely create a blemish on it? They weren't the first to do this either, so I'm not just singling them out. NNL did the same thing with Ef and their whole SUPAH thing in their original translation. I guess it just irritates me on a professional level.
Hmm, well, I can understand being wary after all they have been releasing, only their last patch being the jokeless one. Thing is I can't help but not think of Fan Translation as Professional, which is probably why I don't even expect as much from them, there is only few teams I expect real quality from and that's only because they have shown it from their works. Staircase just isn't amongst them.
Either way, I'm gonna go and hope they calm down a bit on their tasteless jokes if not completely, latter would be preferable.

In NNL's defense, the whole SUPAH thing in the ef translation was a reference to Wind ~Breath of Heart~ the previous minori game they worked on, not some random stupid trolling. Although, NNL is legendary for stupid random trollling.
With Staircase, I never bothered with with them until version 1.1 of the Hoshizora no Memoria patch, but I have to agree, the trolling is tiresome and it does diminish their work. Even in version 1.1 there was a meme here and there the script. One of the characters says "what is this I don't even" at one point in the conversation. It makes their whole group look foolish
Interestingly, I've gone through fan translations that are much more polished than other professional works. I've read through a master's thesis recently that confirmed this. Professional translators have timelines that cause less problematic issues to be ignored so that the text can be translated by the deadline. Among VNs, in particular, I find that fan translators are better than professional ones. You don't need to work in the industry to have a professional attitude, but Staircase comes up short in this regard.

I believe those, most of them anyway, were fixed in 1.2. I didn't check myself, but at least "1000" lines shoulda been fixed now.

I agree with you, but, while it does have an effect on it, the quality wasn't exactly what I am talking about. What I meant are the odds of getting "trolls" included in a release are really less likely in a professional one compared to a fan translated one. Deadlines can be a pain and sometime really degrades the end result though. That aside.
Didn't mention the industry either, but that is indeed true as well. To be honest, if you removed the jokes and put an actually good Editor (one that actually get in good terms with Insem too) in Staircase, I'm quite sure they would be decently professionals and rather fast ones at that.
Alright, I see what you mean. The occurrence of trolls in the translation was something I placed in the quality aspect of the overall project. Given their track record though, I'm doubtful that they would ever stop putting trolls in their patches. Of course, that may change. If they don't put any in this project at all, then I would humbly tip my hat to them because I do agree that they do provide a speedy and good translation.
It's not even that big of a deal anyway...I played starting from 1.1 and only had to get rid of the dolphin folder the first time I ran it.
Plus, the "what is this I don't even" line actually fit (and wasn't really a mistranslation either, although it's very liberal) and I cracked up when it came up
This is more like a teaser release, because the prologue of this game is really short, while some other eroge has quite long prologue before route branching. So far, there is no immature jokes whatsoever.

As a warning, this is 4chan so they aren't always nice about tagging spoilers and SFW images. There's a particularly obnoxious spoiler for Muvluv within the first 5 posts, probably best to avoid if you haven't played it, or at least don't look at the thread until the page fully loads.

I think the consensus was he's either really bad at translating or is just trolling. If so, maybe there weren't any blatant trolls like cg replacement, but it seems like he's set on getting his cheap thrills by ruining it some other way.
To be fair, the translation hasn't been through editing yet and will catch a lot of those errors. Also, a good amount of the posts are merely nitpicking. Anyone who knows more than one language will find that certain things are up to some interpretation--the Japanese language especially. The essential meaning is still there, but some people would have the translation always be done in a certain way, which is pretty much impossible. This is compounded by keeping the meaning while allowing the sentence to make sense in another language. So, yeah, those obvious errors will probably be fixed later and the rest aren't really errors at all. If you hang out at 4chan enough, you'll find that any discussion about translation will likely boil down to something like this.
It looks interesting so far, the only problem i had with the translation was the name change they did a bit in the beginning. It was slightly funny the first time i saw it, but it got old pretty quick. I guess its possible its in the original version of the game, never played it unedited though. Though if it was a joke, atleast it only last for a few lines each time.

If they are planning on releasing a Common Route patch then I would *hope* the next patch could come up in 1 month to the latest implying no problems come up, I can't really give any estimation for a Heroine patch though since they haven't started on it yet and I didn't follow how quick they were in their previous project but they did finish Hoshimemo in a year (or a bit more?) I believe, so it should be done rather quickly and it was a bit longer than this one I think, minus the fact they did release it in a rush for April.
Anyway, you shouldn't really listen to me and just guess from the website (http://staircasesubs.com/) and their progress chart (http://staircasesubs.com/dracu-riot/), just check on them weekly at best, can also check 'em up on their IRC or follow Insem on his twitter if you want.
By the way, there was a vote up on their site for which Heroine to translate first, Miu won by a long streak (77 votes) though close to Elina (51 votes), the others two were nowhere close enough (26-28). (Vote is still on-going, just sayin' .. the ranks remain the same as of now though)

Minus the slight illegality of translation patches and/or back-ups, free hosts should be enough and have a big enough bandwidth to offer them, even some people offers free hosting for such things.

The common route refers to the part of the story before it branches into specific routes. Also, common routes will contain the choices you make that determines which route you will eventually be on. If a story has a prologue, then the common route comes after the prologue, but, again, before the plot branches.
Regarding the speed of the site, it happens sometimes. Eventually, it'll go back to normal. Just be patient.

Erm.. How do I enter Elina route? When prompted, I always choose the one that most likely please Elina but I can't enter her route, because everytime I tried to proceed from the part where they hold a welcoming party for the MC I always got returned to the Title Menu.. like the game ended abruptly on that part.. as far as I know the english patch only consists of common route and some of Elina's route, so that can't be one of the endings right?

As for the actual choices, you'ld need to go with trial-and-error and/or a e-dictionary to see which it is for those already translated.

No serious project has finished this way, and don't confuse Aroduc's kickstarter with something stupid like this, his kickstarter was legitimate as-in it was to pay for his life while putting away his job to work on translating Romanesque, now despite it being DMCA'd.. he'll still work on it eventually, but it just won't come as quickly as it would have. I'm still surprised it was DMCA'd, though, I mean.. the company is dead, surprised they bothered.

Despite my intention of retiring, I still wish to see the completion of Miu's route–she was a major factor in making me choose this game, and I do feel extremely guilty that hers would be the only one untranslated.
The fact remains that there is no time for me to work on her route during the semester. Certainly, I may have time during my summer holidays, but that's also prime time to touch up on one's employability skills through internships, vacation programs and volunteer work.
Nevertheless, if I had any time to work on the game, it would probably be during summer. But that is far from a guarantee. As such, the future of this project will be determined in three stages.
1. Parties interested in the acquisition of the current project or the completion of the remaining route may contact us by 30th September. Should we find a suitable candidate, we will announce the news.
2. If we are unable to secure a future for Dracu Riot with a reputable or reliable candidate by 1st October, the script files for Miu's route will be released to the general public for other interested parties.
3. If, by 1st December there are no active or meaningful attempts at translating Miu's route, I may come out of retirement to work on her route. However, the likelihood of me finding time to work on the game will only decrease year by year. In light of this, if I am unable to give one last attempt at the end of the year, we will stop beating the dead horse, release the remaining routes, and announce the official death of the project.

Yeah, I did say that myself, but I highly doubt only Elina's route has been edited since it seemed like the editing was always close to how quick the translation went. The only other thing I can think of is them sticking to their plans of not releasing anymore partial patches for whatever reasons, but then at first they planned Common Patch and then Full Patch... which they already strayed from, and since they had already released 1/4 of Elina's route by accident (iirc?) and all of it in a contest, I guess they decided to release all of it for the public. But yeah, I'm pretty sure that other than me there's at least 2, 3 or more people here who can read Japanese, or are in the process of learning, so I'm hoping that'll help them if they're using the English patch for wtvr reason. Either way, if the project doesn't get picked up, at least Insem is supposed to release the rest on December 1st if he can't get back to it. Obviously, in that case, Miu's route will still be left untranslated. So there's that.
Yeah, the Rio and Nicola versions of that scene start off the same. If Rio stops at just bandaging your hand you're golden.
Also so far I think Rio had the most hilarious version of that scene, although Azusa's was worth some laughs too.
I'm partially fluent in japanese there are a few kanji I dont understand and have to look back and forth to translate and its all a big time consumption, reading english was easier, and reading japanese may take me three times the effort but still hey I want my Nicola since she is mainly the reason I wanted to play besides Rio since they remind me so much of the cliche routes.
Has anyone tested if the 2.0 patch covers 3/4 heroines or just Erinas?
According to the comments on 4chan it's just Elina. The notice that it's all the heroines except Miu in the VN tracking post is wrong.
Ah, well atleast the common route is done i guess. I read into it more and people are bashing him like crazy, its kinda freaky how many people are mad over what he did.
Yeah, some severe entitlement issues going on there. Not exactly unique to VN fans of course, but it's kind of disheartening all the same seeing how ungrateful people are. I mean, I want the whole thing as much as the next guy, but since I'm too lazy to properly study Japanese on my own I can't exactly complain about someone else not going out of their way to provide me with even more free translations.
Sigh, I really should resume studying Japanese, but Kanji just make my eyes glaze over...
I think a lot of the drama is thanks to how Insem's handled it. Back in June he posted a status update saying he'd originally planned on putting the whole game out on 9/9, but thanks to RL delays he'd put out what he had on 9/9 and definitely would finish by the end of the year. As of that post he'd done Elina, Rio, Azusa, and was starting up on Nicola.
Then he announces that he's quitting the day before the patch was due out, and on patch day we get just Elina's route (which was the same as the patch that went out on Valentine's to like 3 contest winners), and the news that we might get the other routes put out if no one else feels like picking up the project and Insem can't get back into it by the end of the year, which basically means the project is dead.
I know the guy's got his priorities and all, but after watching, say, Rogue do MGQ (who went into the last part of the series outright stating this was his last translation and despite RL devouring his time is so far keeping his word to finish the game when he can), it's hard to not feel at least at little annoyed.
Pretty sure most of the frustration is mostly from the patch only containing Elina's route than Insem dropping the ball, things would probably be going considerably smoother if he had released everything that was done up to this point.
Also, compared to Rogue, Insem never seemed to be as motivated, it looked more like a way for him to try and brush-up his Japanese, and as far as I have seen, most translators get shitted on quite a lot, just even more so when they can't keep their promises. People just take free stuff like this for granted, and I'm pretty sure most people don't even consider all the effort and time it takes to translate a single heroine's route, much less a single VN.
However, as sad as this may be, projects being dropped, even at the last minute, isn't a rare occurance. Dracu-Riot! just happened to have a lot more of light on it than all the other ones that dies-off in the shadow. Hell, I'd have to say kudos to the people who continues after completely translating even a single VN since they should know how tedious it is.
Oh, I certainly understand that people feel like they're being strung along. I just can't understand getting so worked up over it, since this kind of thing hardly surprises me anymore. I don't know why he chose to handle it the way he did, a personality quirk maybe? It certainly takes a special kind of personality to put that much work into translating VNs for free.
For some reason I have an impression of most VN translators being a bit like that... weird personalities with a talent for riling people up. Or maybe that's just moogy or whatever his name was. Not that it takes a special talent to make people on the internet angry...

How to install the japanese thing
control panel -> language -> add a language -> select japanese
then set the language for non unicode program to japanese
control panel -> region -> administrative -> language for non-unicode program -> change system locale -> japanese
I've recently taken an interest in Yuzu-Soft works from my recent trip with a friend, I guess I'll be making time for this later.
Too bad their latest title isn't as interesting as Dracu-Riot.
Insem supposedly put out another patch for this. According to him Miu's route is only 50% done but everything else should be finished. Haven't gotten far enough to test yet:
