Title: About Jast...
Post by: Sundae on February 02, 2011, 07:19:39 PM
Is licensing a finished/nearly-finished fan-translated VN becomes a boom lately?
Now they go for Eien no Aselia, the backport one, the same as the one dakkodango translated. Yes they won't be using the EXACT translation, but they'll use the dakkodango one as a guide. Which means, you'll get more or less the same quality of dakkodango release :|

It'll be good if they start translating the fandisc (spi-tan) and seinarukana, but it'll take another 10 years to release them.

I really hope they stop this kind of attitude :|
I mean, how lazy jast's  translator can get :|

Smart plan to save money, and maximize profits, let the fantranslators do most of the work for you. Rake in the profits.

Indeed from a business perspective, its more cost efficient working this way. Besides that how many projects does this make now, that jast has taken from fan translations?

You talk as if they have dedicated translators. Their release rate doesn't justify that, which is why they make deals with fan translators, so that both of them can get some benefit out of it: JAST doesn't pay as much as they would to a professional translator and the fan translation team gets paid for something that they have been doing for their own enjoyment and/or to share it with others. I know that some fan translators work as professional translators, but in this cases, it's this deal or no deal. In the long term, if this partnerships work, it will work in our favor, since more people will be interested in translating VNs and more VNs will be officially released.

Rake in the profits of a title that's been translated for more than a year (when it's eventually released) and that everyone interested on spending money on it has already bought the Japanese edition? It will be funny to watch that. What worked in theory with Osadai and Demonbane (we still have to see any results) would have worked with Aselia if it had been done a year ago. And the fan translators didn't do any work for JAST, Xuse did and there is no doubt that JAST will have to pay for it, which makes their margin a lot smaller than what they would get with a fan translation deal. It's made even worse by the fact that it's the all ages version, which both JAST and MG admit to barely have any sales.

Well you're forgeting some factors Mana.

-Otakus love fancy extras. If Jast manages to get us a nice looking boxset with an artbook ( they already confirmed that ) and maybe some other small extra, I can imagine people willing to buy the game even though they already played it.

-Some people buy games because they like them, although they already pirated them before.

-Some people buy games to support the company making them. In this case buying the game might enable us to purchase another Xuse title down the road.

-A lot of Jast their audience might have never heard of the fan translation. I for example would never have noticed that game if I hadn't lurked on this board. A lot of fan translations aint that easy to find, unless you find a source of information which keeps you updated on new stuff.

And you forget that people who already bought the game will hardly spend more money on it, again. The only people who will buy it are the ones who don't import for some reason and the ones who are completely oblivious about what's going on around them. As for the extras, it's their only way out.

They don't !?  :o
that's news to me. Well, me and my ignorance...

And you forget that people who already bought the game will hardly spend more money on it, again.

And the fact that you get free english download if you already bought from j-list doesn't really help the profit margin =I

Why aren't they try to translate Yumina or Baldr Sky? I'll wait 5 years for both of them :D

Delays. That is my biggest and only problem with what Jast is doing. Fan translation is almost complete and out, then boom gotta wait months for their release which we still are waiting for ;p

Psssht American working rights.

As if the EU was better, the Portuguese government is going to start a fund paid by the workers so that it's easier to fire them and to give them their severance pay.

JAST today announced (http://www.jastusa.com/school-days-is-coming-in-english) their partnership with Sekai Project and 0verflow to release School Days HQ (http://schooldays.us/).

It got to the point that Duke Nukem Forever will be released before most of their announcements, or, if anything else goes wrong with Demonbane, before all of them.

Wow, JAST picks up another project i'm not interested in. Where's my fucking demonbane x3

I'd actually rather see more announcements from MG since they seem to be grabbing the stuff I want. Hoping the 'detective' title is Kara no Shoujo or something equally as interesting.

Some dude's posting stuff from the JAST AX panel...been stalking the fuck out of this thread. Get it while it's still there.

I'm really wondering what title for female fans they picked up...the TnC group said JAST hasn't gotten them, so...
Title: Re: About Jast...
Post by: Mana on July 03, 2011, 05:47:28 PM
Not only the Togainu no Chi  (for those who didn't get it), but the other groups translating yaoi titles said that none of them has been contacted by JAST, so, like Anon said, it's most likely an otome game.

EDIT: Well, they confirmed that it's Starry Sky.
Title: Re: About Jast...

sounds like jast is trying to get starry sky series

SS? Man, that's sort of a letdown. I was expecting them to do something like Lucky Dog 1...BL has a bigger market, doesn't it?

Ah whatever, I know I'll end up buying the SS games anyway...
Title: Re: About Jast...
Post by: michelous on July 04, 2011, 10:17:00 AM
jast has tried yaoi by guess is they bombed hard
or at least didn't do well enough
i personally would rather have an otome game with h content than a yaoi game
Title: Re: About Jast...
Post by: Madotsuki on July 04, 2011, 01:00:33 PM
JAST's BL games were too niche-oriented to really get a good audience...I for one loved them, but they're definitely not for everyone. Gakuen Heaven would've been a better choice IMO.

They could've at least grabbed one of Sugar Beans' otome games...the protagonists in those are moe enough to attract male customers too. ;;
Title: Re: About Jast...
Post by: laplacian on July 04, 2011, 03:13:58 PM
Just out of curiosity, is there even a viable market for Otome/ Yaoi games ? If you follow mangagamer's blog, even normal VNs are selling worse than the japanese companies hoped for. So it's hard for me to imagine that a product aimed at a fraction of the VN buyers would be successfull.
Title: Re: About Jast...
Post by: Mana on July 04, 2011, 07:17:30 PM
And then you look at JAST and Demonbane sold more than MG's entire catalog. It's a combinations of problems: marketing (every weeaboo knows J-List while barely anyone outside a small circle know MG), selling mostly digital copies (it's already discussed that VN fans are mostly collectors and buying air doesn't attract most of them) and the limited paying methods.
Title: Re: About Jast...
Post by: mahou on July 04, 2011, 08:40:18 PM
It must be more to do with the lack of methods to buy MG's products (credit only) and lack of hard copies that makes it difficult. Being digital only is what hurts them most. They are getting out there and marketing, i'm curious why most weeaboos aren't aware they exist, probably comes to not having hard copies for all their games again.

Looking forward to Fate/Extra from aksys. Everything else was as expected so far.
Title: Re: About Jast...
Post by: Mana on July 04, 2011, 08:50:42 PM
J-List have been around for long and any site with a decent number of viewers with anything Japanese related in terms of content has their banners while I haven't seen MG banners for more than a year. They are more known through word of mouth and their interviews than anything else.

Regarding the lack of physical copies and the payment methods, this was on their Twitter:

Si we've gone through yesterday's box of #dacapo2 and another box already 0.o that's 5 boxes? 130 copies? Glad we brought more for today...

This happened in 24 hours and it wasn't the only thing that sold out on their stand.
Title: Re: About Jast...
Post by: michelous on July 04, 2011, 09:08:54 PM
the funny part is jlist is selling mangagamer's hardcopies
Title: Re: About Jast...
Post by: laplacian on July 04, 2011, 09:37:29 PM
Hm ok, I guess the non existant hardcopies are the main factor. The games alone aint even that expensive anymore, but atm it's more like you "donate" money to em, so they can bring over more stuff, than actually buying any games.
Title: Re: About Jast...
Post by: Mana on July 04, 2011, 10:51:51 PM
J-List is a business and Peter Payne isn't dumb, he knows that there is a profit in dealing with them.
