If you have watched an anime (and you really liked) which is further continued in a Light Novel, you can start by reading that first. I had started with Mahouka, loved it, waiting for further translations. Now, I'm reading Chrome Shelled Regios, currently, on 13th volume, so far so good. Next on my reading list is Overlord 8)
Just read first volume of 35th Test Platoon, and gotta says it's quite refreshing to read light novels :) if there were a few more pictures of the main characters it'd be more awesome. :)
