Firstly... ... ... Geez i hope this is the right place to talk about this.. If its not.. Feel free to move this topic to anywhere else Kureha. >_>.. and sorry.. and.. thanks.. i guess.. XDD

Secondly... What i meant by my lil bro.. ITS REALLY THAT.. My lil bro.. NO.. Not my 'prideful friend'.. But one of blood relation... Yeah.. That one...

Alrite... So i guess.. I could use some of you guy's oppinion.. i'd really appreciate it if you guys could help.
...
....... Listen to my story for abit will ya?

So basically.. i have a lil bro who's about 14 now... He's just been exposed to animes lately. And he's in that 'Live & breathe Anime' phase i guess... Every free second he has, you can see his face so close to the computer screen watching anime that you'd swear he'd go blind in less than a day.

So what happenned was about 6 months back, i guess he ran out of animes to watch. He asked me.. His big bro, whom he knows still goes to Anime conventions, did some cosplaying back then, did an anime marathon back during the time... So i told him the most general of animes to watch...

Gundam, Macross, Bleach, Shana, SlamDunk, Recca, GateKeepers, Narutard, Hayate, FullMetal Panic & Alchemist etc etc etc.

But he claimed he has already seen em, they're boring, or he would come back to me in afew days...
So i tried recommending him some 'lesser known' animes of the modern world...

Fate/Stay Night, Tsukihime, Tears To Tiara, Utawarerumono... Uhhuh..
And those soon pretty much went to...
..
... Shuffle, Clannad, Kanon... uuuhhhuhhh.. >_>

You guys would probably know where my 'anime list' came from probably by now... So yeah.. Apperently, he started ENJOYING the titles from my 2nd and 3rd list... So it came to a time that he asked...

Him: "Hey big bro? Did you remember that episode in Tsukihime where Shiki bla bla bla bla?"
Me: "Eh? no.. I did not watch even a single episode of 'the anime that never existed'..."
Him: "What? What do you mean? Why did you tell me to watch it if you have not watched it"
Me: "Oh that.. Coz i played the Visual Novel..."
Him: "... ... ... huh? What's that?"
Me: ".. ... .... ..(OH MAH JEBUS FARKIN HELL!)... ... uh.. they're.. uhhh.. Books.. kinda like manga... but on a computer..."
Him: "Hey i wanna read too..."
Me: "Uhh.. you cant.. There's too much gore for you... U have to be over 18..."
Him: "Let me guess... Shuffle... is a VN too..."
Me: "... ... ... No... ... .. ?"
Him: "You lie, there's comments on YouTube that says there's a game."
Me: "... ... ..(FARKIN YOUTUBE! SHEET!)... ..."
Him: "Let me play Shuffle then... There's no gore in that right?"

Obviously.. long story short.. I lost... the battle... >_>
... So at age 14.. My bro was exposed to the fact that VNs exist... And the fact that i play em, but he doesnt... He's been bugging me to let him play a VN since... Like SERIOUSLY bugging me...

Well that's ONE problem...

SECOND PROBLEM.. I guess its mostly due to Kanon, Clannad, Shuffle.. etc etc...
I have recently spotted him watching titles such as... *breathe in... *out..

Love Hina.
He is my Master.
Nyan Koi.
(That story where that kid gets thrown into an island with only women in them + strange animals that talked.)
Ah my Goddess.
Chobits.

... And he's only 14.
I dont know about you guys.. But.. kids here.. mature slower than they do on the western side of the world i guess?.. We're still very much conservative.. Even my first real 'die hard anime' experience was when i was 16+... With titles like greengreen when im around 18-ish.. So that's normal i guess? >_>

but WTF!? He's only 14!.. .. ... ... ... CHOBITS AT 14!?..
... Shheeeet!...

So help me guys..
Am i just over reacting?... ... ... ...
How do i make sure that my bro wont go down the dark side in the future? >_>
I have a duty as a big bro to do right now.. gaaargh.. <_<

blakraven66

You led him into romance genre by suggesting those titles...which inevitably led to romcoms...which will inevitably lead to ecchi titles.

What you should have done was suggest and make him like seinen titles. Stuff like Lain, Monster, Now and Then Here and There, Stuff in the Noitamina timeslot, etc... ;)

Brainwash him to like this stuff, and maybe he'll turn into one of those people who avoid ecchi anime, calling it mindless fanservice with no plot. Or, these said titles could mind-rape him into never wanting to watch anime again. ::)

Well, it's just a phase anyway. Like all good things you take in excess, you'll tire of it eventually and slow down. Just make sure he doesn't go the Hentai path...unless you want him to...  :D

Kureha

This could be on topic, I mean parenting issues are for adults after all. LOL

Your brother is hardly on the dark side, chobits isn't that dark at all, most of clamp's works are targeted at young people you know?

Um for Shuffle, I really suggest that you don't let him play it quite yet, 14 isn't really a good age to let him into the realm of 18+ games. Let him watch the anime shuffle. Hand him a few All-ages VNs like Planetarium or something, maybe it'll be sad and put him off of VNs for next few years or so.

Love Hina isn't that bad, I remember watching it as it aired about a decade ago, that would have put me around 15, so about the same age as your brother.

Remember to start hiding your hentai, manga and anime form, and probably your VNs too, or maybe lock your computer so your brother doesn't stumble upon them as he browses for more things to watch when you're not around.

You can ease him into more light hearted VNs when he's more mature.

I'm glad I didn't see you mention stuff like the one piece, bleach, or naruto. *shudders*

There's nothing really you can do at this point. If there is a will there is a way.

I figure your brother isn't an idiot, a small google search about "visual novels" and he should find the sites he wants.
But don't worry, children nowadays are way more "mature" than you think. Those little brats already know all about sex with 12. Sigh when I think how innocent I was with 12 T____T

I would try to take the initiative. Give him Clannad, hope it's too much to read for him and he gives up and stops being interested in VNs. If you're unlucky you might see him playing Taiman Asagi and co soon though =p

Yossarian762

Yeah just give him something depressing and not about sex, maybe it'll "scare" him straight XD

I viewed porn regularly at 14 so it's not really something to panic over imo, unless he starts playing the ones about rape and stuff...

inferno_flamex

Thanks for the posts guys... Appreciate it. XDD

And yeah.. I HAVE been considering letting him have a taste of Planetarian... But then I do not have the heart to remember the game myself, let alone bear the burden of a scar in his mind. LOL

And true.. I guess kids nowadays really do know about sex and the likes faster.

But i guess what panicked me was the fact that more than 6 months ago, he was doing nothing but shoot em up video games... With apperently no real love for books... while today, he's not only an anime addict but also begging me to give him one VN for him to play... or read.. >_>

To be honest, I find that 'transformation speed' alittle shocking...

Well i guess on a worse case scenario, i still could at least constrain the type of VNs he gets to play tho... And yeah, i have ALWAYS stored my VNs in a secret area in my room.. lolol... That being said, the only 'all ages' VN i played was Planetarian, Brass Restoration and uhh... that Detective VN named something like Adam & Eve... But even still there are ecchi parts in them...

So anyone could name other all ages VNs that would be kinda okay?
... Didnt Kira*Kira have an All Ages version? >_>

Turn his attention from anime to manga and light novels.  There's a lot more anime than manga... get him to watch full metal panic and then have him read the light novel that's scattered around somewhere... same for chrome shelled regios... try to avoid Zero no Tsukaima... ah... teach him to appreciate quality or something... make him read the seiha anime/manga blog... no wait... that's way too close to type moon wars... mmm... get him interested in the new anime season?  Make him watch code geass and the other mecha shows if he hasn't already?  Angel Beats is a recent title that was full of randomness bad plot but good music and visuals... ya.

Mana

Make him watch code geass and the other mecha shows if he hasn't already?

Recommending mecha without Mazinkaiser, Shin Getter, Gunbuster, G Gundam, GaoGaiGar, Ideon, Macross, and Gundam 0079~0083~Zeta~Char's Counterattack? Blasphemy!

I'll admit those are good and all... but honestly for a 14 year old... gundam seed is probably best as blasphemous as that sounds.  The flashy animation and rehashed plot stolen from the UC timeline and screwed up sequel can easily serve as a starting point... original gundam is too crappy in animation as good as it is... it's hard for a little kid to get into it.

now that I think about it... there's so many freaking anime out there... the quality seems to be getting lower though...

Kureha

Seed was actually pretty good. I watched it because of Lacus, (there goes my fetish for pink haired girls again) Destiny sucked, but got better when Kira decided to come back as the main character, 00 was great all and all.

Code Geass was worth it just for C.C

Bomb.

... Was that suppossed to be a reference to Vandread...
If so.. Yeah.. I get your point...

.
..

And i've stated before (before the forum rollback) that Im currently diverting his attention to animes by using games from the PS3... but to be honest... Its been kinda getting expensive... >_<

To be honest, I dont really have to recommend him any sort of anime.. In fact i think i've already stated that he's already watched all those 'mainstream' animes all by himself.. ALL BY HIMSELF.. he did not even consult me for it..

So trying to 'recommend him an anime' is pretty much useless at this point since he would probably watch them before I could even stop him.

... I've heard of B gata 'H' type.. something... Yes.. To be honest, I wanna watch that too.. A friend of mine told me about it. And after knowing that the season is complete...

But its the fear that my bro would pick up on titles such as THESE.. WITHOUT ME KNOWING.. that's Im afraid of...
Kodomo no Jikan would be another example... Although I think that its effing cute. >_>

Kureha

I honestly didn't see the appeal of KnJ sure it was cute but not much else.

Some things can't be changed, the only thing you can do is flood your brother with what you'ld like him to watch and hopes he develops a taste for it, otherwise if he wants to watch ecchi things chances are it's not possible to stop him. If he does get into stuff like hentai too early, consult your parents.

...consult your parents.

Oh lord.. you dont know how i actually laughed out loud from this...

Im sure they'll be like... "Hmm.. You DO know that this most likely happened because of YOU.. right?"...

ROFL.. And i dont blame em.. But yeah... Obviously, should things get bad.. That's what I would do.. but for now.. Diverting him with PS3, no matter how expensive it gets sometimes, is still working just fine.. And sure im complaining about the cost, but the games i buy, I end up playing them myself.. sometimes...
